Police Shoot and Detain Gunman in Capitol Complex Shooting.

The Capitol Police in Washington D.C. have confirmed that the gunman who was involved in the shooting earlier today was shot by Capitol Police and taken into custody. The suspect was rushed to the hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries, his current status is unknown.  In a brief interview with the press Capitol Police Chief, Matthew Vederosa said “We believe this is an act of a single person who has frequented the Capitol grounds before…A weapon was recovered on the scene.” CNN reports that the suspect tried getting thru the metal detectors into the Capitol Visitor center, when the metal detector went off he was stopped security, at that time he pulled out a gun, he was then shot by a Capitol police officer, a female bystander was reported to have been injured by shrapnel from the shooting.  The Capitol complex and White House was on lockdown for almost an hour until the lockdown was lifted and authorities were sure there were no other assailants. Since congress is on recess most lawmakers were home in their own districts, but staffers are still stationed in D.C. All congressional leadership including Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell have been briefed on the situation.
