Petition To Offer Ethnic Studies For Providence Public School Students #OurHistoryMatters

Providence Public School students are overwhelmingly people of color. Unfortunately, the history taught in our schools do not reflect the students. According to the petition page, only 55 out of 1,192 pages in history books are dedicated folks of color. A larger discussion has to be had about who is writing, telling and documenting our history. Until that day, we must push power structures to change and bend towards justice. This petition was created with the hope of altering the history curriculum to include non-white people. I think it’s a crime that I had to wait until college to learn about The Black Panthers or Marcus Garvey with any legitimacy. Some might argue that it is too late by then. Hopefully, one day all young people can grow up learning all histories.
