Nike is the first brand to collaborate alongside Olivier Rousteing, outside of his Balmain brand. The first announcement created a lot of anticipation due to the fact that this was a surprise pairing of the two. After Rousteing’s collaboration with HM last fall, I was eager to see what would be done next. Nike is known for their sportswear and Olivier for his structured unique pieces.
The collaboration of NikeLab x Olivier Rousteing: Football Nouveau collection is inspired by Olivier’s love for football, This is the second collaboration in NikeLab’s Summer of Sport series combining Nike’s athletic design with Olivier’s eccentric expertise. The collection drops on June 2nd in NikeLab retailers and its online store.
“Fashion is usually about the catwalk and the glamour, but with Nike it was about performance and the athletes,” says Olivier during his press release. Olivier adds his usual forward-thinking expression to the functional athletic pieces offered for men and women through Nike. Every item shown is in a black and gold color scheme in what he calls “the color of champions.” The collection also includes footwear inspired by Nike Football’s four silhouettes: Mercurial, Magista, Hypervenom, and Tiempo.
Olivier’s displays his passion for sports through this collection by creating pieces you would not see in every day wear. These pieces display his version of luxury athletic wear with a Balmain twist. However, from earlier Nike collaborations, I expected a lot more creativity. The items look like designs Nike’s design team could have done on their own. This is not saying Olivier slacked on this project, his work has already spoke for itself. However, Nike reportedly gives a limited reign with most designers, and may have missed another opportunity by doing so here. With Nike’s popularity in the sneaker industry, the items are going to be highly coveted by consumers and sell out quickly.
