Issa Rae’s Insecure Is Amazing!

We have some quality black tv right now and Insecure is a great addition to the fold. HBO has been in the lead with female-driven, millennial comedies. Insecure is definitely going to be compared to Girls in the best ways.  The show is about Issa, a 29-year-old young professional struggling with relationships, work, and self-expression. This show is really similar to her massively popular web series Awkward Black Girl. Issa is still rapping, still bad at talking to guys and still making poor social choices. It’s awesome how black this show is. From hearing Kendrick Lamar at the beginning to Drake towards the middle, the show is embracing black culture perfectly. The conversations Issa has with co-star Yvonne Orji are natural and charming. This pilot was fun and almost a seamless transition from the web series. I think HBO has a hit and it comes at a perfect time as Girls enters its final season.
