Blog: Mid-Year Music Review (By: @JuicyAnnie)

So we are half way through the year and I thought it’ll be great to share the projects and songs that have resonated with me thus far. I must say, it’s been a great year for music already especially because we had drops from Drake and Kendrick, duh! My analysis won’t be in any particular order but just an overview of what I’ve been rocking with heavy.

I know it’s a little cliché to start off with Drake but I have to do it. Drake is a timeless artist who never fails to give us hit after hit. After giving us ‘Views’ I personally thought he would go on a hiatus and wait to give us more music that weren’t collabs and here we are today with ‘More Life’. This album gives us all the vibes and I’m all the way here for this! We have that typical Drake flow that people love with a little bit of an island twist. What caught my attention were features like Sampha and Skepta who I’m a huge fan of and let’s not forget all of the dope samples used. When I think of summer, I think ‘More Life’.

Since ‘Overly Dedicated’ Kendrick has come a long way but still maintains his style and delivery no matter the growth. It’s very hard to live in a generation where everyone is influenced by a sound and run with it. We don’t see that with Kendrick and his versatility is what I love on ‘DAMN’. It’s very hard for me to love a project from start to finish and ‘DAMN’ just does it to me. From turn up tracks to him showcasing how much of a lyrical genius he is, I must say I personally cannot skip a track.

Since we are on the ‘TDE’ topic, let’s just go right into Queen SZA. If you know me, you would know that I’m been rocking with SZA since I first heard her on featured with other TDE artist. Soon as I got word that she was dropping an album this year, I was waiting patiently for that drop soaking up singles and snippets to fulfill my need for her music. ‘CTRL’ just so happened to release the day after my birthday so I really appreciate the gift, thanks SZA! Beginning to end the production and flow on this album spells perfection to the T. Who sings about being a sidechick and sharing men nowadays? I can’t relate, but her delivery has every loyal chick singing along as if they feel her. SZA has brought awareness to real life issues that although aren’t perfect, it goes to show that great music can be made because of it.

Those are three of my favorite projects to drop this year so far, but I have more faves that I won’t go too much into depth about. I was put on to H.E.R. just by simply browsing playlists on Spotify. She recently dropped ‘H.E.R. Volume 2’, piggybacking on her ‘Volume 1’ project and I must say this project goes if you’re looking for some soulful vibes.

Wale’s ‘Shine’ is completely different to what I’m used to with him, but it’s grown to be a favorite of mine as well. He incorporated Afro beat and collaborations with
Nigerian and Latin artist that immediately caught my attention.

Playboi Carti’s self-named album contains one of the hottest tracks out now. ‘Magnolia’ can’t just be played once, but multiple times. This track will 100% have every function booming this summer. DJ’s, let it ring off! Last but not least, I can’t leave out DJ Khaled. Rihanna has been the talk of the country for the past couple weeks and I don’t blame anyone. ‘Wild Thoughts’ has a Carlos Santana sample, that’s when you know it’s absolute fire. I kind of wish PartyNextDoor was on this track instead of Bryson Tiller, I mean, he did write it, but I guess Rihanna cancels him out, haha.

So, there you have it, a few of my favorite things so far this year when it comes to music. I’m going to be honest, I left a couple of my favorites out because I want to keep you, the readers, on your toes. A couple weeks ago I dropped my very first music podcast featuring S4TB’s very own SholaBoyTellEm and a good friend Rafeaks named, ‘What Are You Listening To?’ If you haven’t checked it out, please do on the link below and stay tuned for more episodes!
